It’s Wiffle Ball for Fat Bastards!
Annual Tournament held at “un-named” schoolgrounds to
replace “Bad Beer World Series“
GRAND RAPIDS, Saturday, July 29, 2000 – The first annual (?) Fat Bastard Wiffle Ball Tournament was held this past weekend at a school-yard-which-will-remain-nameless as a schedule eight squads battle for the Championship. The event was the brainchild of Dave Ringler and Scott Byrne to replace the now-banned Bad Beer World Series. We may have consumed a little bit of beer anyway… Teams who played included: Tom Skerritt Church of Latter Day Saints, T.U.G., Pine Brothers, Carrier Street Posse, Scuzzbuckets, The Tiny O.B., and the SugarBears. Several fine performances were turned in including a stellar defensive performance by Rob “Wwwwobby” Byrne, who defeated Tom Skerritt early in the day in a 22-21 nailbiter. Also, Ron Francis was nearly unhittable with his hard slider. Scott “The Colonel” Byrne was the toughest out of the day and Ringler swatted 8 taters on the day, to lay claim to the Can of Spam as homerun champ. The Championship game came down to a rematch between The Scuzzbuckets, led by Ron Francis and Scott Graves against the Tom Skerritt squad of Ringler and Eric “EZ” Albertson, who had beaten them a game earlier. Francis mowed down the side in the bottom of the fifth to preserve the Scuzzbucket lead and claim the title. Francis was named Most Valuable Player and Best Pitcher. In the Baxter Bowl, a winless SugarBear squad fell to the dancing right arms of The Tiny O.B., led by Jeff “O.B.” O’Bryan and John “Tiny” Heinzelman. The after-party moved over to Oakwood for a cookout and a few refreshing beverages. |
