The 2001 Fat Bastard Wiffle Ball Tournament is History!
Some things never change: Title IX vs. Euphuses for the Championship and Sugar still didn’t homer!
BLAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA Saturday, July 28, 2001 – In a rematch of last year’s title contest, Title IX (a co-ed team) defeated the Euphuses by a score of 7-3 to claim the Fat Bastard Wiffle Ball Championship for 2001. Most Valuable Player & Pitcher of the Year EZ-E pitched 4 strong innings and “Xman” Ringler hit a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie and put the Title IX‘ers ahead to stay. The Title IX squad finished a perfect 4-0 in tournament play and survived a 5 home run performance by Alan Garcia and overcame a 9-0 deficit against the tournament favorite, the Hampton Pirates. In a highly anticipated Baxter Bowl contest, to decide the worst group of Fat Bastards, Big ‘n Little Enis squaked by Caligula’s Bankok Pipelayers Local 107 in a 7-6 nail-biter, highlighted by a superb defensive play by O.B. and secured when Sugar swung at perhaps the worst strike-three pitch in history (witnesses indicate the pitch was at least 46 feet high and outside), leaving the bases loaded and preserving the Enis victory. Other highlights from the tournament included a visit from Joe Prostate, whom, the Committee is happy to report, failed to rub anything while in attendance. Stellar defensive performances were turned in by Trey Sumner and Mike Maat of the surprising We’re Not As Fat As EZ, who actually tossed a shutout against the Hampton Pirates, bested the Schlepprocks in an extra inning quarter-final matchup and finished in third place, losing to the Euphuses in the semi-finals. A sparkling offensive performance was turned in by Todd Tomac and Tony “Ed” Werschky of the Master Batters, who took advantage of Don and Buck pitching for 9 home runs in one game, including 5 consecutive in the 4th inning of their contest. Don Pierce also led the tournament in batting. Several players also connected for multiple grand slams, including Trey, Tomac and Ringler.
The Awards Ceremony and after-party moved over to The Ringler Resort with Ma & Pa, until the Moop’s potty-mouth got us tossed and we had to put him back on his beer cooler at Oakwood. |
